The stylish Morrison Hotel was the setting for the Nordic Christmas lunch on Friday 16 December. The lunch was attended by members of both the Finnish Business Club and the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Ireland and was graced by the presence of both the Swedish Ambassador Elisabet Borsiin Bonnier and the Finnish Ambassador Pertii Majanen.

The general manager of the hotel, Adrian Shanagher, went to great trouble to produce a genuine Nordic experience. The menu contained a number of Swedish specialities specially devised for the occasion. The hotel had even bought Swedish chocolates and “godis” and had acquired Irish Distiller’s entire stock of miniature Absolut Vodka! SAS supplied a splendidly chilled Swedish schnapps.

Nina Frisk led us in schnapps songs, a distinguished guest contributed a song in Swedish, Christine Saloranta sang a Finnish song and Mairéad Divilly rescued the honour of the Irish contingent with a song from the west of Ireland.

The lunch also marked the retirement of Eamonn Hewitt from Stena Line. Eamonn served as chairman of the SCCI from 2001 – 2009. To mark the occasion the Chamber presented Eamonn with a beautiful piece of Swedish glass chosen by Ninni Frisk. Although Eamonn is retiring from Stena, he will remain active in business and in the Chamber.

Reddy Charlton sponsored a magnificent concert of choral music by one of Sweden’s finest choirs, the Adolf Fredriks Ungdomskor in Christchurch Cathedral on Saturday 10 December. The concert was organised by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Ireland.

The show opened with a concert of international carols. After the interval the cathedral lights went dark, the choir dispersed throughout the ancient columns and presented their spine- tingling performance of From Darkness to Light. The darkness was illuminated with the entry of Lucia , a young woman adorned with a crown of lighting candles.

The capacity audience enjoyed an uplifting and moving evening of superb music.

Listen to Mr Paul Keane, Chairman of SCCI and Honorary Consul General of Sweden talk about the concert on the Derek Mooney show on RTE Radio.

Reddy Charlton McKnight in conjunction with the Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Ireland hosted a challenging evening of debate at 12 Fitzwilliam Place led by Shane Mulhall.

Shane presented his provocative views in a learned and witty lecture. His contention is that following the path of ethical behavior is the only guaranteed way to success, both financial and otherwise.

Shane Mulhall is a Chartered Accountant, Corporate Finance Advisor and Director/Chairman of a number of successful Irish companies. He is also head of the School of Philosophy and Economic Science in Dublin. His views produced lively contributions from the interested audience.

A number of participants expressed the view that it was refreshing to be confronted with a topic that challenged our assumptions. As a result the Chamber is encouraged to put reflective evenings of this sort on the programme for coming years.

The field of dreams, Croke Park, was the setting for a fascinating tour and discussion on the implications of climate change for businesses. A large group of members of the Chamber and their friends were conducted on a behind- the- scenes tour of Croke Park, with particular emphasis on the measures being taken by one of the largest stadia in Europe to maintain its carbon neutral status.

The group were then treated to wonderful food prepared by Fitzers, the caterers to the Stadium.

Peter McKenna, the Stadium Director and Commercial Director of the GAA is responsible for the implementation of the Cúl Green strategy in Croke Park.

He pointed out the difference between global warming, which is the continuing rise in the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans, and climate change, which is the change in the distribution of weather patterns over periods of time. This change includes global warming.

He drew our attention to the impacts throughout the world on the changes in climate. The direct impacts include extreme weather effects on physical assets and shortages of water and food. He also pointed out the indirect effects. He referred to increased legal intervention such as carbon taxes, fuel tariffs. He also pointed out the risk to business reputation, because the public and stakeholders expect higher standards of corporate social responsibility in combating climate change.

The opportunities he identified as being those of reducing costs when forced to operate more efficiently and an improvement in communication with employees and stakeholders.

He outlined the significant achievements of the Stadium in achieving certification under Irish and British standards including being the first Stadium in the world to obtain the Sustainability Management System for Events standard. The result is that sustainability is now central to all of the activities in the Stadium.

He pointed out however that notwithstanding the enormous achievement of the Stadium that the effect is minimal unless it forms part of a great effort on the part of everyone. He finished by quoting Al Gore “The climate crisis is our problem. Real solutions, systemic solutions, innovative solutions can only come when we address it together”.

Anders H. Nordstrom who is a Group Sustainability Advisor for ABB globally, based in Sweden, made the second presentation. He gave a talk entitled “Taking Action on Climate Change”. Anders pointed out the importance of saving energy by implementing strategies and using technologies that limit our use of energy. He pointed out that even if the world were to adopt proposals on the limitation of energy usage we would still, by 2030, be continuing to rely on hydrocarbons for 60% of our energy supplies. He pointed out however that our reduction of energy consumption only started about 40 years ago. He calculated that had those strategies not been adopted that we would be using 50% more energy, the equivalent of 2200 nuclear power stations!

Renewables are an important part of the strategy. The difficulty with the renewables is that real sources of renewable energy such as heat and solar energy are to be found of the periphery of Europe and a great distance from where the energy is actually used. This means that efficient forms of transmission of energy are very important. He gave the example that the first transmission set up by ABB at the end of the 19th century in Sweden over a distance of a few kilometers resulted in loss of 30% of the energy generated. ABB have recently installed a transmissions system over several thousand miles from the centre of China to Shanghai and the energy loss is 7%!

After the presentations we had a lively questions and answers session.

All enjoyed the mixture of science, social responsibility and excellent food.

We even had the spectacle of the Irish International Rules Team training on the flood- lit pitch, outside the corporate box in which the event was held!

The Assay Master, Ronald Le Bas kindly invited the board of the Chamber to hold a board meeting in their splendid premises. The board were delighted to take up this offer for its meeting of 27 June.

The Company of Goldsmiths of Dublin was founded by charter granted by Charles I on 22 December 1637. The purpose of the establishment of the company was to prevent “certain abuses and deceits which were daily being committed” through lack of a recognised mark or standard for gold and silver. The Company of Goldsmiths of Dublin has been responsible for protecting goldsmiths, silversmiths and consumers by applying its hallmark to products of the requisite quality.

The Assay Office is located in Goldsmiths Hall, which, in turn is located in the centre of Dublin Castle. The company has a very fine collection of historic and modern pieces. Our meeting took place in the very impressive meeting room of the Wardens of the Company.

At our meeting, we finalised the programme of events for late summer and autumn.

We will start on 14 September with a fascinating discussion of “What did the Vikings ever do for us?”. The popular view of the Vikings tends to be very negative. Our discussion will explore whether there is an alternative view.

On 12 October we will consider the business benefits of combating climate change. The discussion will be led by Peter McKenna director of Croke Park Stadium, the first stadium in the world to obtain certification for sustainable event management.

In November, we will have a round table discussion with a leading politician in Leinster House. This was a very successful event last year.

In December, we again host the Adolf Fredriks Youth Choir who will present their wonderful Sankta Lucia concert in Christchurch on Saturday 10 December.

Finally, on 16 December, we will have our Christmas lunch. This is being hosted in the Morrison Hotel and will have a distinctively Swedish menu.

Please put these events in your diaries now. Further details will follow.

On Saturday 18 June, the SCCI Chairman Paul Keane and his wife Siobhán invited all members to their home for a traditional Swedish Midsummer party. The plan was to mark the beginning of the nice weather. However it was pouring down the whole evening! So instead of focusing on the weather we enjoyed an evening of traditional Swedish midsummer food and schnapps.

There were about forty guests at the event, a mixture of Swedes, Irishmen, Danes and Finns. We had a very pleasant evening together. After a couple of Schnapps, all contributed with typical songs from their country. The most impressive singers came without doubt from Ireland. The Swedes are not as comfortable singing in front of a crowd and can really only sing schnapps songs (take it from a Swede).

We are very much looking forward to a similar Midsummer event next summer.

The Nordic Business Alliance golf outing organized by the Swedish Chamber of Commerce took place in Castleknock Golf Club on 20 May. We were blessed with a beautiful day with gorgeous views over the Liffey valley. Six groups of players enjoyed a great afternoon.

The tranquility of the round was somewhat disturbed by the throbbing of the engines of five enormous helicopters which appeared in the skies. The choppers passed over the course on three occasions. Some suggested that the helicopters were on a training exercise as part of the preparations for the visit of President Obama that weekend. Others suggested that they kept returning so impressed were they by the quality of our play!

One player in particular undoubtedly played extremely well. Anthony Keogh playing off 11 won first prize of 37 points. He also won the longest drive and the nearest the pin competition. Philip Murphy (24) also had a very impressive score with 37 and lost on the count back. Other notable scores were 36 points for John Dunne (25), 33 points for Aideen Hughes (13), 33 points for Donal O’Leary (13), 33 points for Peter Kearney playing off 16 and 33 points for Brendan Murphy playing off 18. The best lady prize went to Eimear Branigan playing off 24.

We had a very enjoyable meal afterwards. The consensus was that we should return to Castleknock next year but hopefully on a day where the double rotors of Chinook helicopters are not rumbling in the sky above our heads.
